Coincidentally, he also finished in 24th place. The first 10 lucky finishers who outlasted the bear earned a free pair of Karhu shoes for their effort. Seasoned local runner Paul Marmaro, who became the Karhu Bear for the day, said that this effort in the heavy and fur-laden bear suit was harder than the Olympic Trials prep training he did while in his prime!

"On the shoe front, there are more lightweight training shoes showing up on specialty running shoes shelves this summer. Nike Free is your market leader in this category. Saucony and New Balance are making in-roads with their reduced heel and lightweight models. One new lower-heeled lightweight trainer recently caught my eye: the Karhu Flow. It had a heel that is even with the mid and forefoot and it did not have any extra weight with motion or stability control materials. The other thing that grabs you about the Karhus: the vibrant colors. The Mens’ Flow looks like they were custom made for VA TECH University."

Karhu Unveils New Advances

BEVERLY, MA, April 1, 2011
Building upon its fast growth in running specialty, KARHU announces new advancements for spring 2011 in its patented, fulcrum technology.

Trusted by runners for over 30 years, KARHUs fulcrum footwear collaborates with the foot to convert a runner's natural energy into forward momentum. Winner of both Runner’s World and Women's Running awards for superior product, KARHU running footwear provides industry leading benefits for runner efficiency and balanced transition delivering unprecedented performance and comfort for all types of runners.

Runners literally Move Forward with the KARHU Fulcrum Advancemen
The new spring 2011 products are the result of two years of biomechanical research and testing at the Neuromuscular Research Center, University of Jyvaskyla, Finland.

Created for performance runners with a mid-foot strike or faster cadence, the latest KARHU innovation for running shoes in 2011 moves the runner's center of pressure more quickly through the shoe into toe-off. The new Fulcrum creates superior response while gaining the benefits of stride balance, stride efficiency, and lower vertical oscillation.

Fast2 fulcrum_ride and Strong2 fulcrum_ride shoes are geared to the more serious runner looking to develop a faster pace during mid-high mileage training runs. The fulcrum points in the new models are placed in the mid-sole and are further forward than all previous models. This delivers an even faster transition to toe-off by preventing the runner from "sinking" into the shoes while increasing forward propulsion off the heel. The outcome is an extremely responsive ride, resulting in more efficient running that translates into faster paces on the same amount, or even less, physical exertion (as measured by VO2).

“For KARHU it is all about helping a runner Move Forward on their run and in life. Our patented fulcrum helps a runner do just that and we made it even better for 2011,” says Jay Duke, KARHU’S president. “Our fast growth this past year shows that runners realize greater efficiency and comfort wearing KARHU footwear.”

The new Strong2 and Fast2 models are irrefutable proof that the company is committed to driving as much performance from the fulcrum technology as possible. "For decades, best-in-class in this industry has been determined by tweaking basic concepts that haven't changed a whole lot,” Duke says. “We're convinced — and our growth proves it — that the fulcrum technology is transforming the standard and causing a profound shift in what training runners can and should expect from their shoes."

Key product details of the new models:
In addition to the forward placement of the fulcrum point, both the Strong2 and Fast2 offer new construction features for greater comfort for mid-high mileage training. Specifically, a form fitting, molded upper eliminates overlap seams that can cause blisters and significantly reduces the need for the cement that affects breathability. Both shoes also feature a breathable, Ortholite polyurethane insole, blown rubber in the forefoot and reflectivity throughout.

Altogether, the new Spring 2011 line includes more than seven different models - each featuring a unique combination of fulcrum point position (rearward, mid and forward), cushioning, stability components and profile. Such an expansive offering gives runners of all levels and body types the ability to leverage the fulcrum technology into a more efficient stride and greater forward momentum.

The newest fulcrum is now available at running specialty retailers and at www.karhu.com.

Bill Moss of Marietta to run in Karhu Bear Outfit this Saturday

For Immediate Release, March 16, 2011: Because Karhu mean’s ‘bear’ in Finnish, The Run Wild 5K, a part of the Publix Georgia Marathon race weekend of events, invites runners to come out on Saturday, March 19, and try to "Beat the Karhu Bear." The first 10 runners who "Beat the Karhu bear” during the 5K and cross the finish line before the bear, will be presented with a coupon good for a FREE pair of Karhu running shoes of their choice. Others who finish ahead of the Karhu Bear will receive a free Karhu t-shirt. The race starts and finishes on the Circle Drive near the Cyclorama in the Grant Park area at 8AM. The Run Wild 5K will be followed by the Kids Fun Run at 9AM, open to all kids age 10 and under.

Bill Moss, a 28-year old chiropractic student at Life University, will run as the “Bear” who all of the runners will attempt to defeat. Moss, who has been running on a competitive level since the age of 14, generally runs the 5K on a track in 15:35, and his times are in the 15:40’s on road surfaces.

“I don’t know how my normal times will transfer to “Bear” times, and I’ve never run in a costume before this Saturday’s race,” says Moss. “It shouldn’t be too hot with the 8AM start time, and like every Atlanta course, I’m sure this Grant Park one will be rolling and somewhat hilly. I’m looking forward to the challenge.”

First-timer friendly and perfect for avid runners, the Run Wild 5K offers a scenic and festive run along a closed course. Among the entertainment and attendees will be the Publix mascot, Atlanta Dream team members and balloon animals. Participants and spectators are encouraged to make it a family fun day and enjoy the race, and to visit the nearby Grant Park Zoo afterward. Zoo tickets will be discounted for all runners with bibs, and for anyone mentioning the Run Wild 5K.

Registration is still open, with Run Wild 5K online registration at $25 through 11:50 PM on March 16, 2011, and the Kids Fun Run is $20. Runners can also register at the Expo on Friday (Noon – 7P) at the Georgia Dome for the same prices, or register Saturday morning at start/finish line in Grant Park beginning at 7AM. Saturday morning (race day) registration is $30 for the Run Wild 5K, and $25 for the Kids Fun Run. The Run Wild 5K is also a final race for runners to post a qualifying time for July’s Peachtree Road Race.

FINNISH ATHLETICS: FLYING AND THROWING

In the words of Britain’s double Olympic 1500m champion Sebastian Coe - "Many western nations have their strong athletic traditions. France and Belgium have had their long distance men, Italy her sprinters, Great Britain her middle distance record breakers. All have their idols, their occasional and ecstatically received gold medals, and their frequent but vain attempts down the field. None, though, with all their human resources, has the sheer will to win that characterizes Finland.”

"The Finns themselves ascribe it to something they call "SISU", some combination of pride and stubbornness and guts. To a Finn with more than his fair share of Sisu, all concepts but winning seem to disappear, all temptation to compromise is resisted, and he becomes twice the competitor, twice the opponent"

Finnish athletes during the 20th century helped to define the pride and passion of what it is to be a Finn. The average Finn doesn't care that their neighbors’ and former colonial masters, Sweden and Russia are so much bigger, the demographic and geographic statistics cannot be changed, as on the Olympic roll of honor it is tiny Finland which has had the greatest triumphs.

Track & Field is the most international of all sports. The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) has more member nations - 211 - than the United Nations. Yet despite the universality of the sport, Finland with a population of only five million, about the size of greater London, has won more men's track & field gold medals - 48 titles - than any other nation in the world with the exception of the USA. Yes, Finnish male athletes have won more Olympic athletics titles than the men of Britain, Germany, or even Russia.

Athletics is a religion to the Finns. The Olympics and Finnish success within them is the embodiment of what it means to be a Finn, and it is not too extreme to say that the Finns really are the Olympics 'chosen people'.

Lauderdale were greeted with a picture perfect race day. The sky was still dark as several thousand runners lined up under the 17th Street bridge, but by the time most of them finished there was nothing but warm sunshine and waves crashing into the sand as far as the eye could see.

The race was sponsored by local retailer Runner's Depot and by running footwear and apparel retailer Karhu and Craft, both of which were well-represented in the 13.1 overall results. Bryan Huberty, a Runner's Depot employee, placed second overall in the men's race with a time of 1:18.02. Meagan Nedlo, Field Marketing Manager for Karhu and Craft, took third overall in the women's race in 1:25.32. Overall winners were Cobi Morales in 1:14.49 and Stacie Alboucrek in 1:22.21.

Those runners who enjoyed 13.1 Ft. Lauderdale's warm weather won't have to wait very long for the next local event, as 13.1 Miami Beach will take place on March 6, 2011. The first 13.1 of 2011 will be 13.1 Miami Beach on January 16. We'll see you there!

Karhu's Point of View on Barefoot Running

Re-Thinking Barefoot Running: New Study Suggests Traditional “Cushion and Correct” Technology At Fault, Not Running Shoes

Beverly, MA (February, 2010) – Barefoot running is all the rage this Spring. But before runners shed their shoes and go barefoot, a new study from the one of the world’s leading sports and fitness research institutes, Finland’s University of Jyväskylä (UoJ), suggests that it’s years of a “cushion and correction” approach to running shoe technology that’s at fault, not the shoes themselves.

A recent study on barefoot running by the Harvard Business School added fuel to the barefoot fire by stating that barefoot runners are at less risk of injuries from heel strikes and may be more efficient overall, as the relatively flat position of the foot during strike better preserves forward momentum.

“Harvard University’s Barefoot Running Study has brought to light that less correction and a more natural forefront strike is clearly beneficial to runners,” said Jay Duke, president, KARHU. “Running barefoot may be an option for a small group of people but most likely not for the majority of runners. Yet the reason many are still suffering from injuries induced by too much cushion and correction is because the main brands are missing the mark. Instead, KARHU offers a revolutionary solution through Natural Ride engineering, patented Fulcrum technology provides natural forward momentum as well as protection and comfort. We launched KARHU less than a year ago and already the buzz of its benefits are reaching running specialty stores across the country.”

More Than Barefoot Running: KARHU Natural Ride Engineering with the patented Fulcrum

The brand has made product perfection a priority, further deepening research by partnering with Finland’s leading sports and fitness research institute, the University of Jyväskylä (UoJ), to develop advancements in running shoe technology and scientifically confirm the technology associated with Fulcrum. The university and KARHU have unveiled the next chapter of their research, which will explore other technologies that can further improve efficiency and performance by working in harmony with the natural biomechanics and physiology of runners.
